Since these two conditions share some of the same symptoms, it is important to know the difference so that each can be treated appropriately.

A cold is caused by a virus, and can be spread through contact with others. Cold symptoms include cough, sore throat, sneezing and runny nose, and occasionally, fever or body aches. The best way to prevent a cold is by washing your hands frequently and staying away from others who may be contagious. There are many over-the-counter options for treating colds, such as Advil and Tylenol, which both contain medications to relieve fever and aches. Sudafed is an over-the-counter medicine that can relieve nasal and head congestion.

Allergies, which vary from person to person, are caused when your body tries to fight off airborne particles called allergens. Common allergy symptoms include itchy, watery eyes, sneezing and runny nose. It is important to try to identify the cause(s) of your allergies so you can avoid those irritants as much as possible.

Allergies can be treated easily with antihistamines, such as Claritin and Zyrtec, which relieve itchy eyes and sneezing. Many antihistamines are also vailable in combination with decongestants to relieve a stuffy nose.

Both allergies and colds can cause the same types of symptoms, such as congestion, runny nose, and sneezing. Symptoms seen more frequently in those suffering from a cold are cough, fever and an achy feeling. Symptoms seen more frequently in those suffering from allergies are itchy eyes and scratchy throat.

All of these symptoms can be treated with over-the-counter medications. However,if you are experiencing dark-colored, thick mucus, you may have an infection, and you should see your doctor. If you are unsure which medication is right for you, your pharmacist will be happy to help.
