Meals from the Heart Cafe

In a city that’s known for its overabundance of fried foods and butter-laden meals, it’s a welcome respite to come across a healthy little restaurant that offers organic, vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and raw foods.

Meals From the Heart Cafe, located in the historic French Market, is just such a place. The restaurant also subscribes to the guidelines set forth by the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association, so this is also a great place to nosh if you suffer from heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity or celiac disease. Made From the Heart Cafe’s mission is to use less sodium, no trans fats, a small amount of sugar, low to no cholesterol and no pork or pork byproducts.

New Orleans Living publisher, Maria Muro, says to make a morning of it and order the vegan-wheat blueberry pancakes topped with fresh fruit du jour ($9). Or, if you feel like staying in, that’s okay too. Made From the Heart Cafe also delivers throughout the entire French Quarter, CBD, Treme and Faubourg Marigny areas. 1100 N. Peters St., #13, (504) 525-1953, mealsfromtheheartcafe.com.
