Louisiana administers several Federal programs that support healthy eating for students. The programs are provided at no cost to students. Schools and organizations must enter into agreements with the Department and are reimbursed based on the number of meals served.

The National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program reimburses schools for the cost of serving breakfast and lunch to low-income students in public and private schools. The program also reimburses schools for snacks served in after-school educational and enrichment programs.

  • The Child and Adult Care Food Program reimburses schools and institutions for the cost of serving healthy meals and snacks to children and adults in day care.
  • The Special Milk Program reimburses schools and institutions that do not participate in other food programs for the milk served to students.
  • The Summer Food Service Program reimburses schools and programs that serve meals to students when school is not in session.
  • The Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program reimburses elementary schools for providing fresh fruits and vegetables, in addition to lunch and breakfast programs, to students.
